This presentation and workshop is for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year post-primary school students.
Optional: Add-on presentations / workshops
1. Evening presentation for parents of your students
2. Follow-up presentation / workshop with your students a few weeks or months later.
Topics include: Exams, study, mental health, managing stress, getting what you want from school and life outside school, challenging yourself and improving focus.
The emphasis for 3rd year students is on the upcoming exams and their future. With TY students, I encourage them to challenge themselves and be open to all the great opportunities that they have in TY. For 5th and 6th year students, the emphasis is on focusing on figuring out where their talents lie and what study and career will be ahead of them. In either case, stepping outside their comfort zone will help them to make good decisions and experience life to the fullest.
To begin, we cover what exactly fear is: How it impacts on our lives, some examples and the benefits of overcoming fear.
I tell my own story about recovering from serious brain trauma: a process which took two years.
The second half is all about audience participation. The audience are challenged to overcome some of the most common fears which we all face on a frequent basis.
Instead of forcing the message with your students, I invite them to connect the dots themselves between my words and the core message. Through years of speaking to audiences I have found that, with this type of content, if they are handed information on a plate they will only temporarily absorb the message. When they are required to engage with the content and think for themselves, it leads to further discussion and a deeper understanding of the message. The meaning stays with them for much, much longer.
Although serious topics are covered, there is plenty of humour to the talk.
There is a powerful call-to-action including a plan designed to motivate and help the audience to face and overcome their fears. Follow up is encouraged.
Audience members leave feeling invigorated and ready to take on the world.
Importantly, they feel prepared to take on and overcome any challenges which have been holding them back, including work projects or study.
